A three-metre panel of glazed aluminium sliding door will weigh several hundred kilograms once the glass is in place. That weight has to be carried by a track, guided by a threshold, and moved by hardware — all of which have to survive daily operation for decades. This article walks through what a good Schüco sliding door installation looks like from arrival on site to commissioning, and where the small details make the biggest difference.
Structural conditions before installation
Sliding doors are less tolerant of a poor structural opening than any other door type. Before the doors turn up:
- The head must be straight. Any downward deflection in the beam above shows up immediately as the sliding sash binds against the head seal.
- The threshold must be level. Not "close to level" — actually level, along the full length, checked with a long spirit level or laser.
- The reveal must be plumb. Out-of-plumb reveals mean the door frame either has to be packed off aggressively or is fitted out of plumb itself.
- The opening dimensions must be within Schüco's stated tolerance. Typically ±5 mm on width and height from the ordered size.
The track goes in first
The track sections arrive as extruded aluminium lengths with pre-cut jointing. On a two-track slider the outer track and inner track are separate. The installer places the sub-track (usually a folded aluminium receiver) into the opening, sets it dead level with packers, and only then fixes it. Any twist or unevenness at this stage carries into the sliding experience for the life of the door.
Sub-track fixings on Schüco ASE 60 installations should be into a structural substrate — a steel goalpost frame in most extension work, or a stiff sub-floor detail. Frame installation
The head track, jambs and sill assemble into a rigid frame that gets lifted into position on top of the sub-track. This is heavy: a two-metre-high frame section can weigh 40-60 kg in aluminium alone, before glass. Installation typically needs two experienced fitters and, on larger sliders, mechanical lifting aids. Fixings are placed following the same principles as bifold installations — packers to carry the load down to the structural substrate, expansion allowance in the correct plane, and no reliance on the finished plaster or brickwork as a load path.
Hanging the sashes
Sash weight is one of the reasons Schüco specifies lift-and-slide gear on ASE 60 sets. The sash sits on carriage rollers when raised for operation, and drops onto a compression seal when the handle rotates to close. The advantage of this over an in-line rolling slider is that the seals are not being permanently compressed as the sash rolls — they compress on demand and release on demand. It gives a much better weathertight seal over the door's life.
Hanging the sash involves engaging the top guide, dropping the sash onto its carriage in the base track, and then adjusting until:
- The sash sits square in the frame with even reveals top to bottom and side to side.
- The lift-and-slide mechanism engages fully — the sash rises the correct distance when the handle is rotated and drops back cleanly.
- The interlock (the vertical section where the sliding sash meets the fixed light) closes with even compression along its height.
- The locking bolts engage cleanly into their strikes.
Glazing
Glass units on sliding doors are large and heavy — typically 44 mm insulated glass at over 100 kg per pane on a residential slider. Handling and setting requires suction lifters and often more than two people. The glass sits on setting blocks at specific positions dictated by the fabricator; incorrect setting-block position transfers glass weight into the wrong part of the frame and can cause failure of the seal or the frame corner over time.
Commissioning walk-through
A properly commissioned Schuco doors installation ends with a documented walk-through. The installer demonstrates:
- Operating the sliding sash with the lift-and-slide handle.
- Locking the sash in the closed position and confirming full engagement of the lock bolts.
- Any secondary lock features (thumb-turn from inside, key-lockable from outside).
- Where and how to clear the drainage channels in the sill.
- Recommended cleaning procedure and maintenance intervals.
Adjustments most first-time owners want
- Handle feel — how much force to rotate for lift.
- Seal compression — how "sealed" the closed position feels.
- Sash stopping position — whether the sash is stopping in the exact spot you want.
All are adjustable within the specification of the door. Ask for them at commissioning, not after handover.
Common installation failures
- Unlevel track. Shows up as the sash resisting sliding in one direction and running fast in the other. Fixable only by removing sashes and re-levelling the track — a serious remedial job.
- Wrong glass setting-blocks. Shows up as bowed sash corners over time, or premature seal failure.
- Undersized fixings. The frame migrates over months, and the compression on the seals becomes uneven.
- No commissioning. The doors work on day one but small mis-alignments were never corrected and never will be by the owner.
